Welcome to
The Front Porch

A Nonprofit Dedicated to Connecting All of Us Through Music

Where music meets community.

At The Front Porch, we’re more than just a music school. We connect people through music. Our focus on music education extends outside of the walls of our Charlottesville location and into the heart of the city through our Roots & Wings outreach program. Our intimate listening room venue hosts concert experiences that will change your life. And our open jam program draws players from throughout Central Virginia.

We invite you to celebrate our 10-year anniversary with us at Boogie on the Bayou, a New Orleans-style fundraiser at Fry’s Spring Beach Club Friday, March 7, from 6 to 11 pm.

Community Programs

Our free outreach programs bring music education and enrichment out to the people who need it most, enriching the lives of hundreds of children and seniors and strengthening the cultural fabric that unites our city.

“Roots & Wings added a music and movement curriculum to YMCA programming, which we would not have otherwise. The children love it. The teachers love it. The parents love it. It is a win-win-win for all. This is a great example of leveraging organizational expertise to enhance services through collaboration and impact.”

-Jessica Taylor, CEO of the Piedmont Family YMCA

Front Porch Music Classes

Private Lessons

For folks itchin’ to move toward mastery, private classes are the way to go. Whatever your skill level, we’ve got a caring, experienced teacher ready to guide you!

Group Classes

A little bit cheaper, a little bit louder, our group lessons bring energy and fun to learning music. We’ll have you playing together by the end of the first class!

Workshops

The Front Porch occasionally hosts one-off workshops with guest musicians. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet artists, hone specific skills, and expand your repertoire.

see what folks have to say:

I love the way you all approach music and learning. I’m so moved by every student (young and old) that I’ve seen perform with the Front Porch. I’ve never witnessed music being shared and taught in such a free, gentle, supportive, and fun way.

— Marcy, Front Porch Parent

The Front Porch has filled an essential gap in C-ville for intimate and cozy music venues. It is hands down the best place to experience folk, bluegrass, jazz, and lots of other types of music.

–Cindy S

My daughter loves your class!  After the first class she said “Mom, I’ve met my people!  I feel happier than I’ve felt in a really long time!” She practiced all week, thanked me every day for finding the class and wrote her song.  The positive power of music!
