The Music
Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience
Authentic Zydeco, Creole, and New Orleans Music from two-time Grammy Winner
For 40+ years, 8th-generation Louisiana Creole Terrance Simien has been shattering the myths about what traditional Zydeco roots music is – and is not. Simien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his bandmates have won two Grammy awards, been included in major studio theatre release films, and have been cultural ambassadors for the U.S. State Department. Driven by African and Caribbean rhythms, the Zydeco Experience has evolved over the decades, incorporating popular genres while remaining rooted in the call-and-response jure´ songs of 19th century Creole Louisiana communities. We’re very excited to have them at Boogie on the Bayou.
Jelly Street Jazz
Crossroads of blues, straight-ahead ballads, and hard-swinging jazz with Larry Bisgaier on guitar, Bob Bennetta on piano, and Susanna Rosen on vocals.
For the cocktail hour, we’ll enjoy the “rock-a-jelly” stylings of Jelly Street Jazz. They’ll start with Sophie Tucker, hit some viper and jelly tunes on their way to Ella Fitzgerald and Bill Evans, and end up on Chet Atkins’ front porch.
Jelly Street Jazz
Crossroads of dirty blues, straight-ahead ballads, and hard-swinging jazz
We’ll kick off the evening with the “rock-a-jelly” stylings of Jelly Street Jazz. Merging low-down dirty blues, straight-ahead ballads, and hard-swinging jazz, their energy is something you’ll want to bottle up and bring home with you. They’ll start with Sophie Tucker, hit some viper and jelly tunes on their way to Ella Fitzgerald and Bill Evans, and end up on Chet Atkins’ front porch. Sometimes they steer these influences – marvelously – into one lane. Each performance is a smokin’ hot trip!
The Food
The evening will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and sweet treats from some of Charlottesville’s favorite local restaurants. The Drinks
Tickets to Boogie on the Bayou include beer, wine, cider, and non-alcoholic and mocktail options. Thank you to our local beverage sponsors for making this possible!
