Hospice Partnership

The Front Porch is deeply honored to partner with Hospice of the Piedmont. Music is powerful, especially in the way it impacts our brain. We know that music can have a transformative impact on our mood, emotions, and memory. It becomes even more powerful if brain function is declining. Music can awaken parts of the brain and the rich trove of memories that are associated with familiar songs or beloved pieces. It will anchor and ground someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s. And it can provide comfort and peace to those nearing the end of their lives. Read more about power of music in our blog post.

We hope to unlock this power for our friends at Hospice of the Piedmont.

The patient was hanging out in her apartment with her son and caregiver today. She was the most alert that I’ve seen and sang along to most of the songs. She doesn’t generally speak unless prompted, and her son was very moved by her ability to remember the words and sing along.

Husband and wife were relaxing in their apartment. Their son was visiting and we all sang together. At the end of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” the husband looked to the wife and said, “You’re my sweetheart.” And when we sang it a second time, they held hands and looked into each other’s eyes and sang every word.

I brought her a present today; an elementary Piano Christmas Book with big notes that she can read. We sat together and went through the piano book, page-by-page. As we looked through the songs, we talked about the notes and dynamics that were written in the sheet music. She taught piano for decades and it was nice to see her so happy and animated while talking about the music. She was so excited about the book that she wrote her name on the inside cover.
