Learn to Jam for Teens and Adults is a four-week course designed to introduce guitar, mandolin, and banjo students to the fundamentals of playing music with others and creating that bigger acoustic and woody sound–and musical conversation–that goes into the laughter and collaboration that celebrates traditional music in a jam session.
Hey, why don’t you kick it off this time, Hiram? One and a two….
It is perfect for students who would like to reinforce and establish their Level I and Level II skills, and for students who desire to play music with others. “Connecting everyone through music” is one of the hallmarks of all of our Front Porch programs, and Learn to Jam is a true beginners’ jam that explores and examines the joys of playing with fellow student-players on their beginning music journeys.
Students will examine a number of favorite old time/bluegrass tunes, such as:
Boil Them Cabbage Down, Good Night Ladies, Old Joe Clark, Cripple Creek, I’ll Fly Away, Amazing Grace, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Oh Susannah, Shady Grove, and others.
Group playing skills: Listening skills, rhythm playing and timing, melody/lead techniques, accompaniment and supporting vocals, kickoffs and endings.
Prerequisite: No ensemble or jam experience necessary, just a basic degree of proficiency in playing common major and minor chords. Must be working on smooth changes between fundamental open chords, and also working on basic strumming/rhythm patterns with a pick. Must also be able to read tablature.
This is a mixed instrument ensemble class for banjo, guitar, and mandolin students who have at least completed an 8-10-week beginner level I class.
