The Rhythm in the Melody: Black Banjo Repertoire and American Clave

THE RHYTHM IN THE MELODY: BLACK BANJO REPERTOIRE AND AMERICAN CLAVE with Súle Greg Wilson of The Carolina Chocolate Drops
U.S. music has a special, funky power that the whole world wants. What is that?
Most U.S. music, both folk and pop, is based upon a simple, specific rhythmic frame, or clave (KLA-vay). The banjo, as the pre-eminent U.S. instrument (along with drum kit) is perfectly able to interpret and exploit the power of clave.
In this one hour workshop we’ll find and recognize this pattern, this U.S. clave, in songs we know. With that under our belts, we’ll then apply it to some classic tunes from the African American repertoire, as well as some related African tunes.
When we’re done, you’ll hear the U.S. clave everywhere, and know how to use it in your banjo playing. We’ll also add some historical and cultural context to a couple of well-known songs.
If you know even a little picking or thumping on the ‘jo, you’re ready for this experience. Bring your ears, your open heart, feet to pat, and your axe, and you’re ready for the U.S. sound .
Súle Greg Wilson will be performing in concert later this evening at 8:00 PM. Tickets and more information may be found here.
