Social Dance Basics with Meg Madden
April 27 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm$20 – $25
Social Dance Basics
From waltzing to two kinds of two step, from understanding to how to lead to learning how to follow, come join us for a 101 on dancing with a partner. This class will be not only a tutorial on mechanics and logistics that will help make your dancing more enjoyable, it will also be the introduction to a repertoire of casual social dance steps and styles that you might find anywhere from the contra dances of New England to the bars in the Bayou. This isn’t a ballroom-style dance class, but an intro to American folk and social dancing of all stripes and influences, so don’t worry about your two left feet, as we’ll soon have both of them in the right places.
Partners are welcome but not necessary, and flat shoes with a little bit of slide (not too rubbery/grippy) are suggested for your comfort! No experience required, ages 12 and up.
Meg Madden grew up in Batesville, VA, and has been dancing since she was tiny. From ballet to Canadian step dance to bachata to contra and square dancing, learning, performing, practicing, and teaching dance have always been a part of her life and wellbeing, and she has had the incredible joy of performing, teaching and learning up and down the East Coast and abroad. With fifteen years of teaching under her belt, Meg’s experience includes the Augusta Heritage Center, the Lake Eden Arts Festival, the Blue Ridge Irish Music School (BRIMS), and dance studios throughout VA. Currently you can find her teaching Irish dance to littles at BRIMS, waltzing to Sweet Afton, or square dancing at the Boot Scoot. When she’s not dancing she’ll be feeding chickens and planting potatoes at Bellair Farm, studying herbalism, or making jewelry.
