Owen Morrison grew up surrounded by Charlottesville’s rich acoustic music traditions. The son of local fiddler Jim Morrison, Owen spent most of his teenage years playing guitar for contra dances and jamming with the area’s fine old-time and Irish music communities. By the time he graduated from Guilford College in 2006 with a degree in classical guitar performance, Owen had toured much of the country, produced two recordings, and developed a reputation as a virtuosic flat-picker and a deft and inventive accompanist. Since then Owen has made his living playing for dance and folk festivals and accompanying fiddlers of all sorts. He has recorded several CDs with his bands Elixir, Night Watch, The Dovetail Ensemble and The Morrison Brothers Band as well as working as a studio guitarist on numerous other projects. In 2018, Owen released “Daybreak,” an album of original waltzes. Renowned folk musician Jonathan Jensen described it as “a colorful bouquet of compositions in 3/4 time, brilliantly arranged and played, full of surprises and delights.”
Homegrown talent Owen Morrison will be joined by two of Vermont’s finest traditional dance musicians to produce a high energy evening of acoustic roots music. Anna Patton has wowed many an audience with her chameleon-like ability to make the clarinet shine in a wide variety of styles not normally associated with the instrument. Naomi Morse’s fiddling exudes energy as she masterfully draws from Irish, Swedish, Canadian and New England traditions. The trio will play a few selections from Owen’s new album “Daybreak” in addition to many of their favorite jigs, reels and folk songs.
Owen Morrison will be offering an afternoon waltz party earlier in the day at Fry’s Spring Beach Club. Tickets and more information about Owen Morrison’s Afternoon Waltz HERE.
