Born and raised in Charlottesville, Nathaniel has been enveloped in music since before he can remember. Music was a rite of passage in his musical household, as it was present from the very beginning of his life. Some of his earliest and fondest memories involved long car trips with his mother and sister, singing a cappella harmonies for hours. Nathaniel became involved with the Charlottesville music scene, first as a member of the Music Resource Center (MRC) and later as a performer who experimented with melodic harmonies, vibratos, blue notes and rap verses.
A dear friend gave Nathaniel an electric guitar. This gift spawned a new passion that led him to dive fiercely into music and songwriting. Shortly after, he formed the quartet Jacob’s Way, where he learned the nuances of playing with a band in a live setting. The tragic death of the group’s lead guitarist and the relocation of the rhythm guitarist forced Nathaniel into a more serious musical role. Out of this tragedy, a new project was born: Acoustic Groove Trio (AGT). With Nathaniel as lead guitarist and vocalist, the band performed widely, sharing the stage with several Grammy nominated artist including Ryan Shaw, Vusi (The Voice) and Mahlasela. He went on to win a national songwriting competition judged by esteemed members of the fine arts: Rita Dove (USA poet laureate), Boyd Tinsley (Dave Matthews Band) and record executive/A&R Bruce Flohr. He has also written for other artists including Maxine Jones (En’vogue), and has performed with and for Wilton Felder Sr. (Jazz Crusaders) and Boyd Tinsley. His full length album, “Collide-a-scope,” was released in 2016, He has since released two additional projects this year, one called, “Eh-suh-ter-ik”, and an 80’s EP called “Crack”. Currently he is working on various other projects with his collaborative partner/producer, Vintagebeatswitsoul, for him, other artists and for film.
