Description: Has your child expressed an interest in music, but you’re not exactly sure where to start? Maybe they’ve taken Musikgarten classes and are ready for the next step? In Instrument Exploration, students are exposed to the layered elements of music and improvisation. We work together to understand the importance of rhythm, and then layer harmonic elements on top of the beat. We use special xylophones that are notated to explore these elements. We also learn basic chords on the ukulele. This class is meant to open children to the idea that they can create music in the moment and improvise. Instrument Exploration is a building block for future musicianship and an exercise in deep listening, which of course is fundamental to ensemble work. A different musical instrument is offered for exploration each week: recorders, accordion, piano, fiddle, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, guitar, and more! Parents are encouraged to join in, but not required.
Prerequisite: No prior musical experience required.
