Time: Sundays, 4pm – 4:55pm

Description: The Front Porch is launching a new chamber music opportunity for teens and adults! Registration deadline has been extended for this 12 week session that begins Sunday, Jan 6. Please send in a 2 minute video to info@frontporchcville.org with your registration materials so that the instructors can assemble level-specific groups and pick appropriate repertoire for each ensemble. String and woodwind musicians are welcome, and advanced pianists are encouraged! Ensemble sizes will range from duets to quintets. Participants can expect weekly coaching by our experienced instructors, focused on developing their sound as ensemble players and their facility with the repertoire. The last session will be a concert, on Sunday, April 7th.

Teaching staff includes but is not limited to:

James Tobin, clarinet, lives in central Virginia and has performed with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Quad Cities Symphony, Ash Lawn Opera, Opera on the James, The Oratorio Society of Virginia, the Virginia Consort, and the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed as guest with the Albemarle Ensemble and performs frequently with the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.  As a soloist James has been featured several times in the Concerts at Cove summer chamber series.

Mr. Tobin maintains a large studio and appears as clinician throughout Central Virginia.  He frequently appears in schools on behalf of the Charlottesville Symphony Preludes program. James has given masterclasses at Virginia Tech, UVA-Wise, and in Charlottesville.  He is the founding director of the Youth Orchestra of Charlottesville-Albemarle Clarinet Ensemble and the Charlottesville Clarinet Workshop.

Studio members are frequent participants in All-Virginia Band and Orchestra, and students of Mr. Tobin’s have placed in the top-ten nine times in the past eight years.  They have performed in masterclasses for David Shifrin (international soloist), Matt Hunt (Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie), Andrew Simon (Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra), Boris Allakhverdyan (L.A. Philharmonic), Carol McGonnell (the Argento Ensemble), Dr. Charles West (VCU), Dr. Janice Minor (JMU), Phil Paglialonga (VT), Robert DiLutis (Maryland) and others.  Studio members have also been accepted to Virginia’s summer Governor’s School for the Arts, Interlochen’s One Week Clarinet Institute, Interlochen Summer Arts program, the Philadelphia International Music Festival’s Young Artist Program, and both the Interlochen and Idyllwild Arts Academies.

Sarah Weltman: Born and raised in Maryland, Sarah holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Industry with a concentration in cello from James Madison University. Music has been at the center of Sarah‘s life since age 9 when she first picked up the cello and fell in love with film scores. Although new to teaching, Sarah is classically trained and has over a decade of experience performing for weddings, private events, festivals, and with select orchestras and chamber groups in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions.

Prerequisite: Chamber musicians should be comfortable playing with others in the classical style, and be able to sightread at an intermediate level.
