“If I were to describe Andrew Neil’s musical Journey in one line it would probably read something like this: ‘Recruited athlete out of High School to the USMA, West Point, to car accident, to onset of psychosis and mental illness, to songwriter, to seclusion, to psychotic episode gone bad, to jail, to State Hospital, to recovery, to recording artist, to helping others through music.’” – Ray Maternick (Andrew’s Father)
Andrew Neil is considered an “outsider” music artist, according to Daniel Johnston, and is included in Ranker’s list of “Best Outsider Music Artists,” which ranks the top outsider music artists/bands in the world. When listening to Andrew perform live, one quickly realizes they are hearing something unique, distinctive and very special. It’s a combination of Andrews raw, unpolished driving rhythm, percussive guitar playing on his vintage nylon string Ovation, and his soft yet powerful and emotionally charged vocals as he takes one on an uncompromising musical journey. His songwriting and vocal delivery contains musical influences from Elliot Smith, Anthony Kiekies, Kurt Cobain, Nick Drake and Daniel Johnston.
Andrew began writing songs following a head injury sustained in a car accident in 2009. Since then he written nearly 400 songs, and never had any music training to speak of. In 2014 he was hospitalized due to a psychotic episode and remained in a state hospital for three years until his release in May 2017. While hospitalized he wrote and recorded 70 songs using a battery powered recorder. Upon his release from the hospital, he released an album containing 11 of those songs called “Code Purple.” This album has been recognized as the only record album ever produced in which all the songs were written and recorded in a State Hospital.
Since leaving the hospital in May 2017, Andrew has written scores of songs and has finished recording his first studio album, “Merry Go Round.” This album was produced and recorded by Andy Waldeck, who is also featured in the album on bass and electric guitar. Other notable musicians who are part of this project include Nathan Brown (drummer for the band Everything), Gina Sobel (flute on two songs) and Jack Sheehan (saxophone on one song). Andrew’s songwriting skill and unique melodies created a wonderful sketch pad for producer Andy Waldeck to work with. He turned the album into what many are calling an alternative/Indie-rock masterpiece with an outsider spin. “Merry Go Round” is Andrew’s first of many studio albums to come!
